Struggling to steer clear of gossip? The word of God warns against it.
It’s easy to get sucked into gossip, since it seems to have become part of our culture. Media sites are always spreading rumors and people in the comments sections of videos and articles love to stick their noses in other peoples’ business!
However, the Bible warns against such behavior. Here are 5 scriptures organized by praisejamzblog to help you see the negative impact of gossip so you can avoid it and be blessed.
#1 Proverbs 16:28 (NIV)- “A perverse person stirs up conflict, and a gossip separates close friends.” Gossip usually causes people to form unfavorable opinions of others from misinformed rumors. Hurtful words can break the bonds between family and friends, and this often leads to unnecessary strife. Distance yourself from such conversations.
#2 Ephesians 4:29 (ESV)- “Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear.” Gossip is often used to tear others down, or keep past mistakes painfully fresh. The words that we speak should be kind and encouraging, not cutting, foul or false. Avoid this negativity.
#3 Proverbs 26:22 (NIV)- “The words of a gossip are like choice morsels; they go down to the inmost parts.” The words of a gossiper may be tempting to entertain, but they can intoxicate and deeply wound those they are directed at. Don't be a part of that.
#4 James 1:26 (ESV)- “If anyone thinks he is religious and does not bridle his tongue but deceives his heart, this person’s religion is worthless.” Many call themselves Christians, but will open up about the business of a not-so-anonymous person on a whim. Realize that a loving Christian does not speak ill of fellow Christians, or even non-believers. Jesus commands that we love each other, and if we love Him, we will keep His commands (John 14:15).
#5 1 Peter 4:15 (NKJV)- “But let none of you suffer as a murderer, a thief, an evildoer, or as a busybody in other people’s matters. Yet if anyone suffers as a Christian, let him not be ashamed, but let him glorify God in this matter.” The troubles you face in this life should not be self-inflicted. Making your life about discussing and butting into others; lives is just as distasteful as the other things listed.
