God never promised us that every day would be easy. There will be heartaches, cloudy days and prolonged seasons of struggle in the life of every believer.
But the assuring news is, the Lord never leaves His children comfortless. So if you’re going through a hard time, you can find refuge in the word of God with these 7 Bible verses to comfort you in affliction.
But the assuring news is, the Lord never leaves His children comfortless. So if you’re going through a hard time, you can find refuge in the word of God with these 7 Bible verses to comfort you in affliction.
#1 Psalm 34:19 NIV “Many are the afflictions of the righteous, but the LORD delivers him out of them all.”
No matter what you’re going through, how rocky the road and how long your journey through the wilderness turns out to be. In the midst of it all, there is a hope. Receive this assurance from the Word that God has a plan for your deliverance. The struggle is temporary.
#2 John 16:33 MSG “I’ve told you all this so that trusting me, you will be unshakable and assured, deeply at peace. In this godless world you will continue to experience difficulties. But take heart! I’ve conquered the world.”
Let’s face the truth: expecting to live a trouble-free, burden-free life is neither realistic nor biblical. Right in the pages of Scripture we find a guarantee that we’ll go through. Nevertheless, our conquering Savior, Jesus Christ, has already overcome our many afflictions. He won the victory at Calvary. And because we belong to Him and He lives in us, we are victorious, too! In fact, we are more than conquerors through Him, according to Romans 8:37.
#3 Romans 8:18 (NLT) “I consider that our present sufferings are not worth comparing with the glory that will be revealed in us.”
Always remember, suffering is a time-limited event and serves a purpose. It sets us up for God’s glory to be revealed in and through us. When you are brought low in your life, God will raise you up in due time. 2 Corinthians 4:17 (NLT) puts it this way: “For our present troubles are small and won't last very long. Yet they produce for us a glory that vastly outweighs them and will last forever!”
#4 Jeremiah 29:11 (NIV) “For I know the plans I have for you," declares the LORD, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future."
If your plans are falling apart right now, don't worry. Just know that God’s plan is coming together. Though you may not prefer the process of journeying along this rocky road, know that in the end, you win. Something good is on the horizon. Trust the Lord’s plan. His ways are higher than ours. His good and perfect will, will be done.
#5 Psalms 42:11 (NIV) “Why, my soul, are you downcast? Why so disturbed within me? Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise Him, my Savior and my God.”
This particular Psalm is so awesome because the writer is talking to himself. He’s asking, why am I all down in the dumps, defeated and disturbed by my trial? He then offers up the solution that waters his faith, even in a dry place. He says, place hope, not in man, circumstances or your own power, but in God, for He never fails. The psalmist also says, “I will yet praise Him” and you ought to do the same. The next time you get caught in a storm, rejoice right in the rain. Praise is always in order. It pleases the Father and it strengthens you.
#6 Psalms 23:4 (NIV) “Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for You are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.”
God never leaves us, even though trials and tribulations make us feel as if we are alone. God is always there in times of distress. We need not fret over how deep the valley, how dark the night and how difficult the circumstance. Just as Jesus was in the fiery furnace with Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego in Daniel 3, He, too, walks through the fiery furnace of affliction with you. With Him on your side, nothing is impossible.
#7 Isaiah 41:10 (NIV) “So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.”
What a comforting reminder in times when you feel weak! God strengthens you. He stretches out His hand to hold you up so you won’t fall. 2 Corinthians 4:9 (NIV) tells us, we may be “persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed.”
Tough times don’t last. Rain eventually ceases. The sunshine will come from behind the clouds. Cling to hope.
Don’t allow your setbacks to destroy your hope for the future. God knows what you’re going through and has an amazing plan for you. Be comforted by His word, strengthened by His spirit and fueled by your faith in His sovereignty.
