If you feel like your life has taken a detour, a long, roundabout route to destiny, instead of the straight, quick path you had envisioned, it can be frustrating.
But Dr. Tony Evans, pastor of Oak Cliff Bible Fellowship church and author of Detours: The
Unpredictable Path to Your Destiny, has answers about why God allows this to happen in your
life.
“God never takes us from where we are to where He wants us to be in a straight line,” he said in an interview with The Gospel Herald.
“He zig-zags us there. The reason He does that is because development has to occur for us as well as preparation of our destiny for us,” explained the president of The Urban Alternative.
Evans believes the developmental phase is critical, as it is the time God uses to work on us. This is so we are ready to handle the responsibilities that come along with carrying out our unique missions on earth according to God’s will.
Though this construction process feels aggravating and sometimes, counter-productive, the leader of the 10,000-member church in Dallas, TX says it is so God can also repair the areas within us that are broken.
"God takes us on detours because something needs to be fixed in our lives or constructed for a better future so that we can get back on the main highway to our destiny,” said the father of Bible teacher and War Room star, Priscilla Shirer.
"God's invisible hand is in the glove of history, walking, working, twisting, turning and bringing things to His intended goal,” he said.
Our sovereign God is there while we’re navigating this winding road of life, orchestrating things to work out for our good Evans reminds us. "God is sovereignly in charge of what happens in our life down to the most personal, intimate details of our existence," he continued. "When you understand that God is in control of things that appear out of control, then you can maintain control even when you do not understand what's going on."
Despite the heartache and pain, emotional strain, and sometimes agonizingly slow process, the pastor assures us all that, if we continue to serve God, things will work out according to His perfect will. In fact, Evans asserts, the delays and setbacks are all a part of His master plan to produce a desired outcome.
“The comfort is to know that if I am, to the best of my knowledge, walking in the will of God, that when things aren't working out, they are actually working out because God has a purpose in them not working out,” he explained.
"When you understand that, it can be bring peace and calm to even the most tumultuous of
situations,” Evans said.
