A prominent gospel singer says business decisions are about more than money-making. They must be ethical and consistent with her faith convictions.
GRAMMY® Award-winning gospel singer Erica Campbell is a multifaceted businesswoman, but isn’t willing to sell just any old thing.
The “I Luh God” singer says, if it’s unhealthy or conflicts with her faith, she’s not going to promote it.
“They brought energy drinks to me that weren’t healthy, that were bad for the body. I said no to it,” said the 44-year-old nationally syndicated radio host of Get Up! Mornings with Erica Campbell in an interview with Forbes.
According to her, another unacceptable opportunity presented itself that she also swatted down. “There was a tour opening up for a huge artist but, they didn’t love Jesus at all and I said no to that,” Campbell said.
She continued, “There’s so many things I had to say no to because it didn’t line up with what I believe in.”
However, after rejecting avenues that required negative compromises, the WE tv reality star was propositioned to attach her name to a wig line called Erica By Erica Campbell, in partnership with DC-based celebrity stylist Vernon Martin.
To that, she said yes.
Though the one-year-old venture has reportedly “had some highs and lows” in the profit department, Campbell, a former hairdresser, has peace about the business she has chosen.
“If I can’t lay down at night and feel good about it, I can’t do it,” added the first lady of California Worship Center that she heads up with her husband Warryn Campbell.
Finally, despite the initial ups and downs of the hair business, the solo singer, also one half of the gospel duo Mary Mary, reports that things are looking up.
“It was a rocky start, but a year later things are going well,” she said.
