GRAMMY® Award-nominated gospel singer Travis Greene has officially accepted an invitation to be the opening act at President-elect Donald Trump’s Liberty Ball.
For those who may be upset over the Christian musician’s decision, he explains how he made his choice “after much prayer, deliberation and soul-searching.”
“I literally spoke to most of my spiritual advisors throughout the country and it was an overwhelming go. That’s what they told me, that they believe this is the will of God,” the 33-year-old said in a video message.
Greene will be singing his hit song “Intentional,” which peaked at No. 1 on Billboard’s Top Gospel Songs chart and remains a favorite of gospel fans around the world.
According to the leader of Forward City Church in Colombia, SC, he views this open door as a sign that God has granted him access to places and people of influence.
“Many times in the Bible when God’s hand was on someone, on His servant, He gave them access to places of power. They served and spoke His word in front of kings that they agreed with and disagreed with,” reasoned the Stellar Award-winner.
Greene continued, “So I believe this is a door opened from God for me to engage in culture, not to sit back and tolerate or complain, but to help redefine culture. So I’m taking the light and the love of Jesus where it belongs.”
Trump will officially be sworn in as the 45th president of the United States on Friday, January, 20th after taking the oath of office at the Capitol in what will be the country’s 58th inauguration ceremony. The Liberty Ball will be held at Walter E. Washington Convention Center.
Trump’s inauguration is expected to draw thousands of protesters who oppose the billionaire businessman. According to a Washington Times report, the magnitude of the demonstrations is expected to break the record set at the 1973 inauguration of President Richard Nixon, when more than 25,000 activists marched and dozens were arrested.
The responses to Greene’s choice to participate in Trump’s festivities have been mixed.
Kenefra Carter, an Instagram follower and fan wrote, “Seriously?!! I can't believe that you're supporting someone who routinely disrespects our community. I'm saddened that anyone would support him but pay checks change morals. I love your music and I hope others continue to support you. I just cannot.”
Supporter Kanita Benson expressed the opposite view in her Instagram comment. “As a supporter, I trust your heart for God and am personally living to obey God's mandate; even if it means going where everyone else thinks I shouldn't. The center of God's will is the safest most effective place to be. Praying for you to minister powerfully!” she said.
Whether for or against the performance, Greene isn’t swayed by public opinion either way. Instead, he asked himself three questions that helped him make his final decision to accept.
“I asked, would I do it for free? The answer was yes. Would I do it if no one was watching? The answer was yes. And the last question, what would Jesus do? And I believe He would go,” he told TMZ in a video interview.
At least three official inaugural balls are planned, which will feature dancing, live entertainment and appearances by Trump and his wife, Melania.
