Tamela Mann’s first Grammy Award win in Los Angeles Sunday at the 59th annual ceremony brought her to tears as she thought of the one person she wished could be there to see it: her mother.
“This is amazing. My mom would be so happy right now,” said the emotional TillyMann recording artist who took home the trophy for Best Gospel Performance/Song for “God Provides,” written by Kirk Franklin.
The 50-year-old has previously spoken of her nurturing and loving mother’s battle with Alzheimer’s, that robbed the matriarch of seeing her daughter’s ministry success.
“My career took off while she had Alzheimer’s disease, so she kind of missed out on a lot of the things I experienced,” the “Take Me to the King” singer told CelebrityBabyScoop.com of the late psalmist.
“Even to this day, there have been many times where I’ve cried that she missed so many of my
accomplishments,” said Mann, who had one of those crying spells on music’s biggest night of the
year.
But there weren’t only sad tears. The “Mann & Wife” actress let out plenty of joyful shouts of praise over the triumphant milestone, too.
“Thank You, Lord. Thank You, Jesus. Hallelujah!” rejoiced the ecstatic vocalist, telling the audience she was praising because, after all, “this is gospel”—and praise is exactly what gospel artists do.
Before concluding her speech, Mann thanked her husband, children, and of course her “little brother” Franklin for penning the smash hit. He also won the Best Gospel Album Grammy for his chart-topping album, Losing My Religion.
“Y’all take our picture,” she said, summoning her longtime musical collaborator on stage.
As the two who have been singing together since their Kirk Franklin & The Family days back in the 90's stood side-by-side, it was a full circle moment indeed.
