Gospel Singer Donnie McClurkin Shares Disapproval of Trump But Says ‘Pray For Him’ Anyway

A new CNN/ORC poll reveals that President Donald Trump has the highest disapproval rating for a newly elected president. Among his non-fans is gospel singer Donnie McClurkin.

The Grammy-winning “We Fall Down” singer is listing all the reasons the billionaire Republican wasn’t his choice, while still encouraging Christians to offer prayers for the widely-disliked Commander-In-Chief.

“I did not vote for him at all because of his vitriolic speech and his unintelligent approach at campaigning, his lack of policy, his misogynistic ideas, the whole nine yards [and] racism,” said McClurkin, listing his oppositions to the president in an interview with nationally syndicated radio show Get Up! Mornings with Erica Campbell.

But even though the 57-year-old, along with a majority 53% of Americans reportedly disapprove of the president, McClurkin says believers aren’t off the hook when it comes to praying for the newly minted leader.

“Now is our time to pray for him. This is the job of the church. Now let the world protest, but the job of the church now is to go into prayer and pray that, number one, he succeeds, because if he fails, we have to deal with the consequences as a nation,” the Pentecostal preacher told host Erica Campbell.

The second thing McClurkin thinks Christians should pray for concerning Trump is preservation of his life because, perhaps, “somebody’s going to try to do harm to him,” said the New York-based pastor of Perfecting Faith Church in Freeport.

He isn’t the only one focusing on praying for the politician.

Tina Campbell of the Grammy-winning duo Mary Mary recently published an open letter to Donald Trump stating that she would “pray for him,” citing 1 Timothy 2:1-3 as biblical evidence that Christians should make requests to God on behalf of its government leaders.

The 42-year-old vocalist touched off a bitter online war with heavy back-and-forth debate among her supporters and detractors. The "I Need a Day to Pray" author also received a slew of negative responses.

Earlier this week, in an effort to clarify her intentions and the reason why she is interceding for Trump, Campbell wrote on Instagram, "In order for my prayers to be received by a loving, forgiving, pure and Holy God, I must, first, approach Him in that same manner because that's what He requires of me.”

She added, “So when I pray for this nation, its leaders, its citizens, this whole world, and for anything, I, first, make my greatest effort to meet almighty God's requirements for answered prayer so that He will hear my prayers, receive them, and act on behalf of them."
